How do you respond to compliments from others?
When friends say that your hair or dress looks great, how would you respond?
In my culture (Taiwanese), we would probably say "No, it's not. Your hair/dress is better than mine." We just try to reduce the extent of the compliment and always want to appear inferior to others. |

In English, people tend to agree with the compliments, so they will say: "Thank you". However, Vietnamese people tend to deny the compliments, they will say something such as: "No, not that much"... |

In a broaden view, to Eastern countries / cultures, people seem to deny the compliments and try to be inferior to others but to Western countries / cultures they seem to agree with the compliments. |

It's true that Vietnamese usually deny compliments to show their modesty. However, I thinks nowadays more and more Vietnamese is learning to accept compliments, esp young people. They usually say "thank you" or smile to show that they are happy to hear that. |

Furthermore, some Vietnamese teenagers even say something like" everybody says so" when they receive a compliments. Vietnamese teenagers are very confident nowadays. |

Well, we should face the fact by agreeing "thank you" and then give the compliment back "yours is nice, too" to make the both happy. |

I love the answer " U can say that again". it sounds Enlish and somewhat 'pro-'. hahah.
here are some ways to accept compliments I wanna share:
-for things that we are wearing: thanks/ Im glad u like it/thanks, but its nothing special.
-for things that we own: thanks/Im glad u like it/ I like them.
-for accomplishment (win a medal, etc): thanks/ i did my best/ i couldnt have it done alone. |

I think when a person complicate us, we feel happy and we smile or laugh. It's a way to show your gratefulness. Sometimes, we can say "really" or "you're so kind" to response him/her. |

Reponsing to a compliment is different in different cultures. For example, Vietnamese people rarely accept the compliment. However, English people will accept the compliments and thank directly. I think reponsing a compliment depends on the culture. |

In Vietnamese, we often refuse the compliments by saying, "Mine is not as beautiful as yours" rather than say: "Thank you, I'm glad to hear that." |

I don't think that Vietnamese always have a tendency to deny compliments. It depends on the intimacy between the one who says the compliment and the one who receives the compliment. If they are not close , the receiver usually denies the compliment. If they are close, the case will be in contrast. However, nowadays, I usually see that receivers will say "thank you" and smile or just smile when they are complimented. |
